Terri Hendrix is a singer-songwriter, educator, and author with over 25 years of experience as a nationally touring artist, performing both solo and with other distinguished artists (including legendary Texas musician and producer Lloyd Maines, her studio and frequent stage collaborator for nearly 30 years). She conducts year-round, statewide songwriting and music workshops for children, adults, and individuals with special needs, with experience that includes in-school residencies, camps, and community programs. Hendrix co-wrote the GRAMMY Award-winning instrumental "Lil' Jack Slade" for the Chicks and has received a star on the South TX Music Walk of Fame, the Art of Peace Award from St. Mary's University, and the Distinguished Alumni Award from Hardin-Simmons University. Additionally, she was honored with a SMART Award for artistic excellence, inducted into the Women's Hall of Fame, and received a lifetime achievement award for her contributions to the arts in San Marcos. In addition to her own longtime career in the music industry, she has run the nonprofit "Own Your Own Universe" Center for the Creative Arts since its launch in 2012. Her master recordings and archives are housed at the esteemed Wittliff Collections at Texas State University.

"Terri Hendrix has gotten ahold of something uncannily original down there in Texas and integrated it into a remarkably unique blend of spoken word Texas country music. You’ve never heard anything quite like her innovative rhythmic style, and on top of that ... her phenomenal harmonica skills. It’s fast-paced, recognizably folksy good music, but it’s also done with the most contemporary of lyrical deliveries, including a hip hop – inspired, breathy background vocal."

— Melissa Clarke Americana Highways

"Terri Hendrix is a woman of wit, wisdom and conviction: a poet with a wide smile and a deep heart. She leaves you feeling lighter, even though you can sense your exposure to something philosophically profound.” — Rocking Box 33 Series

Terri Hendrix is on the Texas Commission on the Arts Touring Roster. This partnership makes it possible for Terri to couple her performances with music or creative writing workshops, women's retreats, educational programs at schools, and specialized programs for those with disabilities throughout the state of Texas.

Grants from the Texas Commission on the Arts could cover up to 50% of Terri Hendrix's fee to perform, conduct a workshop, or a special needs program. "Arts Respond Performance Support grants" provide support to nonprofit organizations throughout Texas the TCA Touring Artist Roster.

All Texas nonprofits, schools, colleges, and units of government are invited to apply. The intent of this program is to advance the creative economy of Texas by investing in arts activities. Arts Respond Performance Support is the companion grant program that allows performing arts presenters in Texas to apply for a portion of the artistic fees for one or more approved companies or artists from the Texas Touring Roster. This is a quarterly program that can provide a grant to help with these costs. These applications must be submitted in advance of the performance and by the appropriate quarterly deadline.

Organizational Booking Transparency

Terri Hendrix is an independent Texas touring artist listed on the Texas Commission on the Arts (TCA) Touring Roster. Organizations booking SongBuddies or other programs through the TCA Touring Roster are contracting directly with Terri Hendrix as an individual roster artist.

Terri is also the Founder and Executive Director of Own Your Own Universe (OYOU), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that supports grant-funded community arts programming, including OYOU SongBuddies and other inclusive music initiatives offered both online and in person.

When OYOU secures grants, funds are administered through the nonprofit to operate its community-based programs. When Terri Hendrix is booked through the Texas Commission on the Arts Touring Roster, those engagements are contracted independently through her artist entity.

This structure ensures transparency, proper grant compliance, and financial clarity while allowing both the nonprofit and Terri’s independent artist work to thrive.

Creative Impact Programs

Life's a Song Workshop

The Part That Ain't Art Workshop

Terri Hendrix has run her own independent record label since 1996, releasing all of her music through her website’s online store. Her work has been featured in independent films, commercials, and other formats.

For over 25 years, she has conducted “Life’s a Song” workshops — both solo and in collaboration with producer and Austin City Limits Hall of Fame inductee Lloyd Maines. Whether teaching on her own or with Maines, Hendrix offers an all-inclusive creative experience for everyone from beginners to actively performing musicians.

Attendees can expect candid conversations about releasing music independently in the digital age, as well as in-depth sessions on production, performance, and songwriting. Several handouts are provided, covering topics like alternate tunings, rhyme schemes, and songwriting structure.

Time is often divided between “The Part That Ain’t Art” (the music business) and “The Part That’s Art” (creative approaches to songwriting and production).

The workshops are presented in an interactive Q&A format, and participants are encouraged to bring instruments, notepads, and their curiosity. Each session is designed to inspire and empower musicians at every stage of their journey.

A student concert for family and friends is typically included at the conclusion of the workshop, retreat, or event.

SongBuddies

Terri Hendrix was diagnosed with epilepsy at the age of twenty-one, but rather than allowing her health challenges to define her, she turned to her music, writing, and the creative arts as a means to thrive both personally and professionally.

Through her own journey, Terri discovered her true passion: to inspire others by introducing them to a diverse range of artistic expressions. She believes in providing the tools and pathways for individuals to live their best lives, regardless of the obstacles they may face.

Her vision began with the idea of creating an inclusive space where everyone—regardless of financial circumstances, social or mobility challenges, age, or gender—can explore and enjoy the creative arts without fear of bias or discrimination.

SongBuddies:

In line with this mission, Terri Hendrix has developed SongBuddies, a program designed to accommodate individuals with special needs. She works with participants of all ages, including both verbal and nonverbal students.
